Concept

The Baton Rouge Health Connection is the link between physical therapy rehabilitation and the continuation of a healthy and active lifestyle following therapy. It also connects students studying kinesiology with licensed physical therapists in a professional clinic setting. Finally, the clinic reaches out to the community by providing health and wellness workshops and classes. With all of the relationships found at this facility, the clinic is focused on and designed around the connections that are made.
The physical therapy clinic space is warm and inviting as to not intimidate patients, while the gym area is more energetic and vibrant to stimulate those working out. A link motif is found throughout the building which is a visual reminder of the many connections created at the facility. With its state of the art equipment and the many programs that are available, the Baton Rouge Health Connection will provide fitness and wellness services for the advancement of the community’s health and well being.

Existing Conditions

The building was built in 2008 to be the new headquarters location for Republic Finance. It is currently occupied and being used as their office space. Lincoln Builders did the construction of the building while Coleman and Partners designed the architecture.
With the main goal of capitalizing on sustainable design opportunities, this building has high performance glass that allows maximum visible light while reflecting solar heat gain. The high performance HVAC system also includes a heat recovery ventilator system. In addition, the HVAC peak load is minimized to the months of August through October because of the careful site planning. The building uses high efficiency light fixtures and transformers that work with an energy management system for building lighting control. Finally, the building is constructed with recycled materials such as steel, fly ash concrete, and aluminum framing system. The high albedo roof system and select landscaping that reduces irrigation also add to the green design.

Site Plan

The clinic will be located in the Towne Center Business Park of Cedar Lodge Plantation on a 1.7 acre site. It is positioned on Commerce Circle off of Corporate Blvd. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has a northeast orientation. The placement of the building on the site was carefully chosen to control direct solar light and heat while maintaining a high dependence of natural light throughout the day.

Area Map

The building is located in East Baton Rouge Parish close to I-10 and the new development of Towne Center. This area is well located to all points of East Baton Rouge Parish such as retailers, restaurants, hotels, office buildings, and banks.

Introduction

The Physical Therapy business is growing across the nation. As baby-boomers reach the age where joint pain makes it difficult for them enjoy every day activities, physical and occupational therapy services are becoming more and more of a necessity. They are not only looking for relief from their pain, but desire to improve their lifestyle as well. In response to this growing trend, the Baton Rouge Health Connection will offer an outpatient physical therapy clinic and fitness center for the people of Baton Rouge. This wellness center will offer a total lifestyle approach for healthy living through exercise, nutrition, and community programs. The clinic will provide rehabilitation services to help restore movement and function to injured patients, helping them return to their prior level of independence. The rehabilitated patients can then transition over to the fitness center where they can continue to exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent re-injury.
The project’s client is the Department of Physical Therapy at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center located in New Orleans. The department will set up an affiliation clinic in Baton Rouge and team up with practicing physical therapists to create a learning outpatient clinic. Here, LSU undergraduate kinesiology students and those in the Physical Therapy program at LSUHSC can acquire hands on experience while working with and assisting licensed physical therapists.
